LA QUESTION

Why does environmental regulation get weakened?

L’une influence-t-elle fortement l’autre ? Les trois quarts des votes exprimés décident.

pourquoi

Rules get written for big corporations, and small shops like mine can't afford to follow them, so they get gutted. → influence ? → Our teams weaken regulations to clear permits faster.
I’ve watched small businesses like mine get left behind when rules are drafted assuming corporate resources. The ones that can’t afford compliance staff end up having to cut corners or go out of business, which makes it easier for the team to justify ‘clearing permits faster’ by ignoring what’s left of the rule.
modérateur I've never seen a rule gutted due to small shops' inability to follow them. Our agency doesn't target small shops for enforcement.
I have seen senior engineers actively negotiating for exemptions that dilute environmental safeguards, framing these reductions as necessary trade-offs for speed rather than compliance failures.
I have witnessed many minor modification permits being rubber‑stamped without close review due to time constraints.
I have observed senior engineers negotiating exemptions to speed up permits, but I have not seen a direct link to the rule‑writing process for large firms.
In my cost-of-compliance work I see the small-firm burden directly — fixed compliance costs hit a 5-person shop far harder than a 5,000-person firm — but that burden explains why small firms ignore rules; it does not explain why senior engineers negotiate exemptions for permit speed. Different actors, different mechanism.
I have seen the same rule read completely differently from the agency side and the industry side, and I know how easily a rule gets gutted when the people writing it assume lawyers and compliance staff.
I have no visibility into whether small business struggles drive the specific permit negotiation tactics used by senior engineers.
I've seen rules that assume a compliance department we don't have, so we skip what we can't afford.

Weakened environmental regulation often occurs due to powerful economic interests lobbying against stricter laws.→The studies driving repeal are funded by industry, so the evidence base itself skews toward cutting rules.ouvertdiscussion (12)
